Carole J. Springgate, 80, died at 12:22 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton. Born October 24, 1934 in Alton, she was the daughter of Edwin and Alice (Ballance) Stevenson. On September 28, 1957 she married James F. Springgate in Alton. He preceded her in death on October 7, 2005. She was a graduate of Alton Senior High School. She and her late husband were both very active with charitable organizations in the Alton area. They were among the original volunteers with the Crisis Food Center. Mrs. Springgate had been a blood donor to the American Red Cross, volunteered for the Salvation Army’s “Ring the Bells,” and was a volunteer at the Caravan Shop supporting the Oasis Women’s Center. She was a member for over 50 years and past president of the local chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Service Sorority, served as a Madison County Election Judge, and was a supporter of the Alton Little Theatre. In 2006 she was recognized by the Madison County Urban League for her service to the community. Mrs. Springgate worked in bookkeeping for C.J. Scholsser in Alton and later in the business office at Illinois Bell Telephone Company. She was a longtime devoted member of the Elm Street Presbyterian Church serving as an elder and working on various projects. She was recently honored as the oldest living member of the church during the 95th anniversary in November. Surviving are two sons, Steven F. Springgate of Godfrey, and Mark E. Springgate and his wife Liza of Portland, Oregon and two grandchildren, Frances and August Springgate. Visitation will be from 2:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2015 at Elm Street Presbyterian Church in Alton. Reverend Bill Veith will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
