Carol Fox Hays, 75, passed away on February 20, 2013 in Palm Desert, California.
Carol was born on September 28, 1937 in Shelbina, Missouri. She was raised in the small farming community of Shelbyville, Missouri and was a graduate of Shelbina High School and Truman State University. Rumor has it that Carol taught Norm Stewart all he knows about basketball while they grew up in Shelbyville.
After teaching elementary school for several years, Carol married William Clark Hays, MD on June 16, 1968, bravely becoming the stepmother of six adorable (debatable) and active (undebatable) children ranging in age from 4 to 14. Carol and Bill added to the clan with the birth of Eric in 1970.
Carol spent the next 17 years carpooling kids, cooking casseroles, managing the chaos, and even squeezing in a little tennis, before retiring with Bill in Palm Desert.
She was preceded in death by parents Lydia and Wayne Fox, husband Bill, brother Bud Fox and sisters Helen Smay and Eleanor Trussell. She is survived by sister Marilyn Turnbaugh, sister-in-law Jeana Fox, stepchildren Mimi Adams (Brad), Ed Hays, Bill Hays (Jane), Charlie Hays (Lisa), Gigi Sanders (Carl) and Tom Hays (Nancy), son Eric Hays (Heather), 18 grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. will be held Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Elias Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home, Godfrey, Illinois. A celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 1, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church in Alton, Illinois, with Rev. David Crowley officiating, followed by a burial at Valhalla Cemetery in Godfrey. A reception will follow at Lockhaven Country Club at 2:00 p.m.
