Carl Grindstaff

Carl Leon Grindstaff, 86, passed away at 10:20 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013 at his home.

He was born Apr. 10, 1927 in Zalma, Mo. to John and Louella (Boyd) Grindstaff.

He married Lena Settles in White Hall, Ill. on Nov. 27, 1948.  She survives.

 He was a crane operator at Olin Corp. in East Alton for ten years and later worked at General Steel in Granite City until it closed in 1972.  He then went to work at Cottage Hills Auto Parts as a night watchman, retiring in 1987.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working on lawnmowers.  He loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Randy (Helen) Grindstaff of Ste. Genevieve, Mo.; 3 daughters, Bonnie (David) Ursch of Wood River, Janet Dare of Magnolia, Ark., and Carla Chambers of Alton; 7 grandchildren, Michael Ursch, Kelly Ursch, both of Wood River, Craig (Linda) Davis of Wellsville, Mo., Eric (Ingra) Dare of Magnolia, Robert (Tara) Giffin of Alton, Lindsey Chambers of Bethalto, and Tyler Grindstaff of Paris, France; 4 great grandchildren, Collin Ursch, Declan Hierman, Reese Dare, and Jordyn Giffin; special caregivers Jack and Patty Grindstaff; and his adopted daughter, Marilyn Burns.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Everett, Norman, Verdell and Hassell Grindstaff; and one sister, Jewel Grable.

Visitation will be 4-7 Wednesday, May 29 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30.  Ed Settles will officiate.

Burial will follow at Woodland Hill Cemetery in East Alton.

Memorials may be given to the East Alton Fire Department, in recognition of the help they provided to Carl and his family.
