Buford “Boots” L. Walters, 94, died peacefully at 12:33 am October 29, 2011 at Mother of Good Counsel Home in St. Louis.
He was born in February of 1917 in Terre Haute, IN, the son of the late Curtis A. and Ethyl (Reese) Walters.
He married Irene Henkhaus on September 4, 1940 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wood River. She preceded him in death on September 17, 2002.
He graduated from high school and attended Shertleff College before going to work at Shell Oil Co. A long time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, he will always be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend to many. Along with his family he enjoyed sports, travel, and loved to sing.
Boots is survived by seven children and their spouses, Sue Goessling and John of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Sharon Jun and Richard of Perrysburg, Ohio, Mary Jo Keenan and Jim of Alton, IL, David Walters of Talking Rock, GA, Nancy Green and Phil of Grafton, IL, Teresa Back and Brian of Godfrey, IL, and Jeffery Walters and Mary of Acworth, GA; as well as seventeen grandchildren, Mark Goessling, Sheri Lynn Elfreich, Steve, Scott, and Rick Jun, Susie Silberhorn, Jim, Mike, and Joe Keenan, Sara Johnson and Amy and Adam Welch, , Monica Johnson, Laura Laird, Lisa Back, Kenny and Allison Walters; and thirty-two great grandchildren.
In addition to his loving wife, Irene, he is preceded in death by his parents, on sister Edna Reuter, and three brothers, Darrel, Joe, and Leland Walters.
Friends are invited to join the family at 9:30 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Alton for a rosary before a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am on Wednesday November 2, 2011. Father Jim Walther OMV will be officiating
Burial will follow at a later date at S. Joseph Cemetery in Alton, IL
Per his wishes cremation rites will be accorded.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
