Bob Hughey

Poplar Bluff, MO |

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Bob Hughey on March 25, 2025, at the age of 83. He passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and devotion to those he cherished.

Bob was born on March 20, 1942, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, to his loving parents, James and Bonnie Hughey. Throughout his life, he was known for his integrity, kindness, hard work, and the way he made everyone around him feel valued and cared for.

On July 7, 1964, Bob married the love of his life, Martha, and together they shared a beautiful, fulfilling marriage for over 60 years. Their love and devotion to each other were unwavering, and they built a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Vietnam for one year as a Lieutenant. For his bravery and dedication, he was awarded the Bronze Star, a testament to his courage and commitment to his fellow soldiers and his nation.

After his military service, Bob dedicated his career to serving as a civil engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. His work contributed to vital infrastructure projects, and he took great pride in the impact he made through his profession. His keen mind and dedication to excellence were evident in everything he did.

Beyond his career, Bob was a man of many talents and passions. He had a deep love for golfing, reading, and continuously educating himself. He was dedicated to helping others grow and see their own potential, always offering guidance, encouragement, and wisdom. Bob was also a skilled craftsman, finding joy in building things with his hands. He had a knack for home renovations, never hesitating to take on any old house project his daughters threw his way. No matter the task, big or small, Bob was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Above all, Bob’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Martha Hughey; his daughters, Jennifer Hughey and her husband Mike Bergen, and Julie Elson and her husband Jay Beard. He was a proud grandfather to Abi Sholar and her husband Carter Austin, as well as Ellie Elson and Vivi Elson. His love extended to his great-grandsons, Sunny and Otto Austin, who brought him immense joy.

Bob’s warm presence, sharp wit, and generous heart made him a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Those who knew him will always remember his wisdom, laughter, and unwavering support.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Saturday, March 29th, from 9:00 AM until time of service at 11:00 AM, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL. Deacon Bill Kessler will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Association alz.org or The Disabled American Veterans Foundation dav.org in his honor.

Though he is no longer with us, Bob Hughey’s love and legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
