Betty J. Wuellner, 92, died at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at her home in Godfrey.
Born June 23, 1929, in Alton, she was the daughter of August and Kathaleen (Lipple) Purcell. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Belleville, IL. On December 30, 1947, she married Frederick A. Wuellner at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. He preceded her in death on November 19, 2012. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey, the Alton Community Service League, and a longtime member of Lockhaven Country Club. She served as a Unit Board Chairman of the American Cancer Society and was the past Chairman of the Snowball Dance which she attended for 50 years. Betty was known for her hospitality and entertainment.
Surviving are three daughters, Pattie Smith of St. Peters, MO, Susie Wuellner of Alton, and Chris Wuellner of Godfrey and three sons, Augie Wuellner (Maura) of Godfrey, Ed Wuellner of Godfrey, and Mike Wuellner (Tami) of St. Charles, MO. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Julie Sauvage (Kent), Matthew Smith (Jennifer), Leigh Hunt (Brandon), Mitch Wuellner (Molly), Reverend Dr. Sean Holloway (Liz), Andrew Maag (Lindsey), Alexandra Clark, Hayley Clark, Nathan Wuellner, Hannah Wuellner, Joseph Wuellner, and Taylor Wuellner, six great-grandchildren, Jacob Sauvage, Kaitlin Sauvage, Evie Smith, Anna Smith, William Holloway, and Jenna Holloway.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, A.J. Smith, and a brother, Robert Purcell.
A private family memorial mass will be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Father Steven Janoski will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Anthony’s Foundation or the American Cancer Society. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
