Bertha May Shaw

Bertha May Shaw, 91, beloved mother and faithful servant of God, was called home to heaven Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Jersey Community Hospital.

Bertha was born in Alton, Illinois to Annie and Andrew “Bert” Boyd. She left high school before graduation to provide a home for her younger siblings and worked at Olin in shot shell loading during World War II. In 1951 she married the love of her life, Bernard Shaw, and they raised their family in Jerseyville. Bertha was a devoted wife and mother, providing encouragement and loving care to her family throughout her lifetime. A member of First Baptist Church in Jerseyville for many years, Bertha served as a deaconess and Sunday School teacher. She has been a faithful member of Delhi Baptist Church for more than 40 years.

Bertha was a resident of Jerseyville Manor Garden Court for several years and, more recently, Jerseyville Nursing and Rehab.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Lynn Shaw of Olathe, Kansas; daughter and son-in-law Vicki and Bill Ivester of Delhi, Illinois; three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren, and five step-great-great-grandchildren. Bertha was preceded in death by her husband Bernard, her parents, her brother Clarence, and her two sisters Myrtle and Elizabeth.

Visitation will be held at Delhi Baptist Church in Delhi, Illinois from 9-11 am on Wednesday, May 8, with funeral services led by Pastor Ken Fields beginning at 11 am. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the church, mission or charity of your choice.
