Bernice I. Mortimer died at 6:29 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Rosewood Care Center under the loving care of TIP Hospice. Born in Bunker Hill, she was the daughter of John V. and Ruth J. (Zarges) Sauerwein. She was a Journeyman Printer for Olin Corp. in her early years, and a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church.
On September 24, 1954 in Bunker Hill, she married Eldon Dean Mortimer. He preceded her in death on May 16, 2009. Surviving are two sisters, Sylvia Simpson of Alton, and Wilma Stinnett (Richard) of Alton, and two brothers, Victor Sauerwein (Charlene) of Bunker Hill, and James Sauerwein (Judy) of Glen Carbon and an aunt, Alma McDaniel of Roswell, New Mexico, numerous nieces and nephews and special friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Eldon Paul Sauerwein and Irvin Edward Sauerwein and a brother-in-law, Floyd Simpson.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Messiah Lutheran Church. Reverend Randy S. Fischer will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Memorials may be made to the 5A’s Animal Shelter or Messiah Lutheran Church. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
