BERNARD TONSOR SR
JERSEYVILLE – Bernard Francis Tonsor Sr., 88, died at 2:36 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2016 at his home in Jerseyville after a brief, but valiant fight with brain cancer.
He was born on January 17, 1927 in English Township in Jersey County to the late Stephen J. Tonsor II and Rose Mary (Schmidt) Tonsor.
He graduated from Jersey Community High School before being drafted with the U.S. Army where he served for 3 years and 3 months during World War II in Okinawa, Japan and Korea.
Shortly after returning home from the service, he met and married the love of his life, Bernadine Lammy, on February 10, 1948 at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville and together they have been blessed with 67 years of marriage and the shared in the joys of raising their two children.
Bernard was loving and generous in nature, and a devoted husband, father and grandfather. In his younger years, he enjoyed a competitive game of pool and as he grew older took interest in many hobbies including carving, camping and traveling with his wife. He was also known by his many friends, family and neighbors as a gifted gardener and for his passion for splitting and cracking nuts – which he shared with many throughout the years.
He began his working career with Owens-Illinois, traveling throughout the country to assist in starting up new plants and remained a loyal employee for nearly 16 years before he accepted a job as a Machinist with Oldsmobile in Lansing, Michigan, where he and Bernadine relocated and raised their family in nearby Charlotte, MI.
After retiring in 1978, he and his wife moved to Mission, TX where they remained for 20 years before settling back to Jerseyville in 1998, where they have continued to reside for the past 17 years.
Surviving are his wife, Bernadine Tonsor of Jerseyville; a son and daughter-in-law, Bernard Jr. & Rebecca Tonsor of Rudyard, MI; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia & Rod Goodrich of Charlotte, MI; seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jean & Jerry Jarvis of Jacksonville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward & Maxine Tonsor of Medora and Gerald & Pauline Tonsor of Peoria.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Patrick Tonsor and Stephen J. Tonsor III; as well as a sister, Kathryn Warden.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 11:45 a.m., Monday, January 11, 2016 at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12 noon on Monday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fieldon, with military honors being conducted by the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 Color Guard.
Memorials may be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in care of the funeral home.
