Alton |
Barbara Jo Essmueller, 72, died unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, June 25, 2013.
Barbara was born on October 25, 1940 in Hannibal, MO, the daughter of the late Mary Eileen and R. E. Long, Jr.
Barbara grew up in Hannibal, MO and attended the Hannibal High School where she was active in high school organizations and served as a Pirate Pepper. After graduation she was accepted into the St. Luke’s Hospital Nursing program in St. Louis, MO, where she graduated and then became a Registered Nurse. She was known for her caring, compassionate and nurturing personality which is in keeping with her passion for nursing. Barbara always wanted to be a nurse from early childhood until the day she realized this goal. She could always be found reading books about nursing and nurses and this continued throughout her younger days to adulthood. She was extremely proud of her career. She specialized in pediatrics for many years but most recently directed her attention toward the geriatric specialty. Although she never had children of her own, every child she cared for all those years was like one of her own.
In 1962, she was married to Robert G. Essmueller, her husband for 51 years and who survives her. After their marriage they made their home in Alton where they have lived for these many years. In addition, she is survived by her only sister, Brenda Long Roberts (Thomas S. Roberts, II), nephew, Darin Scott Harvey (Genessa Gerber Harvey) and nephew’s son, Keith A. Harvey. She lived for her family and was generous and kind in every way. In addition to her family, she loved her French poodle puppies and considered each one a family member.
A private family graveside service will be held in Hannibal, MO with spreading of her ashes.
