Barbara Ann (Powell) Mitchell Gray age 75 passed away Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 10:30 p.m. at Eldercare of Alton.

She was born December 16, 1934 in Edwardsville, IL, the sixth, child of Granville and Helen Shelby Powell. 

She married Neamon Mitchell and to that union a son was born, Vincent A. Mitchell.  She later married James Gray on October 15, 1990 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were married for 20 years.  She graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1952.  She was retired from Senior Services Plus as the Director of the Foster Grandparent program, which served Madison and Bond Counties.  Mrs. Gray was a former member of Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church in Edwardsville until she united with Unity Fellowship Church in Godfrey.  She was a member of the Alton Branch of the N.A.A.C.P. where she served on the Executive Committee and Banquet Committee. 

Barbara is survived by her husband, James Gray, one son, Vincent (Viviette) Mitchell, one granddaughter Vanity, 7 step-children and several step-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and a special cousin Mrs. Anita H. Banks of Alton; In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters, Corrine Brown, Nina White and Arlene Kemp, 2 brothers, Maurice and Shelby Powell and her grandparents.

She was loved and will be deeply missed by her husband and many families and friends.  Barbara never met a stranger, she was a very loving person. She embraced everyone. 

Visitation: Saturday August 7, 2010 from 9 a.m. until time of service at 10 a.m. at Unity Fellowship Church in Godfrey

Funeral: Saturday 10:00 a.m.

Burial: Upper Alton Cemetery
