Arvel A. Fowler

Arvel A. Fowler passed away at Relais Bonne Eau Hospice of Southern Illinois in Edwardsville on September 2, 2011.

He was born in Collinsville on July 19, 1929 at the home of his paternal grandparents, Wesley and Anna (Wendler) Fowler.  He was the oldest of two children born to Doris and Rose (Slaby) Fowler.  He lived in the Collinsville Area until 1939 when his family moved to Bethalto.

He attended Bethalto Schools form third grade until graduating on May 29, 1957 from the three year high school.  He finished his senior year at Roxana graduating on June 4, 1948.  In 1950 he was hired at Olin Brass Mill. He retired from Olin Brass as an expeditor on August 1, 1989.

Arvel was baptized at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Collinsville by Rev. Theo H.. Roschke on October 27, 1929.  He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto on May 31, 1953 by Rev. W.G. Bruegmann..

He married Maridel Nixon of Williamson, IL on Jun3 29, 1968 at Staunton Methodist Church.by  Rev. Marion Ford and Rev. Diane Brunette.

He was active at Zion Lutheran Church serving as usher, elder, chairman of Zions Centennial Book and Chairman of the decorating committee for 50 years.

Arvel was the founding creator and curator for the Bethalto Historical Museum since the mid – 1980’s.  For his work at the museum, Arvel has received cash and a Community service Award from Olin Corporation, the Studs Terkel Award from the State of Illinois, and The Rock Solid Award for 2011from Cornerstone Church.

He is survived by his wife Maridel Fowler of Bethalto; two nephews Robert (Donna) Manns of Whitharrral, TX and Steven Manns of Levelland, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Doris and Rose Fowler, his sister and her husband, Marian (Fowler) & Harold Manns and his in-law, William & Nora (Best) Nixon.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Tuesday September 6, 2011 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

Visitation will continue from 10 am until time of funeral services at 11 am Wednesday September 7, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethatlo with Rev. Mark Hofferber and Rev. Dan Decker officiating.

Burial will follow at.Spangle Cemetery in Livingston.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Landscaping or the Bethalto Historical Museum
