Anthony Springman
Alton |
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Anthony Louis Springman. Tony's legacy is marked by his passion for teaching, his commitment to the community, and his unwavering dedication to his family.
Born August 14, 1953, in Alton, IL, to Paul William and Barbara (Newcomb) Springman, who predecease him, Tony died August 15, 2024, one day after his 71st birthday. He graduated from Marquette High School in Alton and then Vanderbilt University in Nashville where he remained until he returned to Alton after retirement. He is home.
Tony's 45-year career began with his years at University School of Nashville, St. Henry's, and Christ the King, culminating in his transformative tenure at Harpeth Hall. He was a beloved teacher and coach who always fostered critical thinking and empathy. He inspired countless students with his knowledge of history and current events and with his sense of humor.
While his contributions to education were significant, Tony's influence reached far beyond the campus. He was deeply committed to service, both at his church and in his community. Most recently he served on the vestry at the Episcopal Parish of Alton and was instrumental in welcoming Father Garron Daniels, guiding the church into a new chapter of leadership. His dedication to CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) in Franklin, TN, demonstrated his profound desire to advocate for children in need, ensuring they had a voice in the criminal justice system.
Faithful and achingly honest, he loved an audience and telling good stories. Tony's charm and wit were as integral to his character as was his love for Cardinals baseball and his dogs. He brought joy and laughter to those around him. After his diagnosis of leukemia in March of 2023, he certainly felt the love and appreciation of friends, family, and countless former colleagues and students.
First and foremost, Tony was a man of family. Nothing gave him more delight than having his children and grandchildren in the house, but then nothing gave him more sadness than their leaving.
He is survived by wife Lisa, children Emily, Rachel (Darrell), Austin (Allegra), Nathan (Emma), grandchildren Ethan, Logan, Mason, and Brielle, siblings Paul, Dan, and Kate, along with numerous cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews.
As we bid farewell to Tony, we celebrate a life rich in love, laughter, and service. His impact on his family, his church, and the countless lives he touched will endure as a testament to the remarkable person he was.
The funeral mass will take place Saturday, August 24, 10 am, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Alton, with a luncheon celebration immediately following. That afternoon from 4:30-6:30 p.m., the family will also host a Toast to Tony at Tony’s in Alton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tony's memory can be made to the Episcopal Parish of Alton, a place that was close to his heart and where he devoted much of his time and energy, or to a charity of your choice.
