Andrew Bensman

Alton |

Andrew "Andy" J. Bensman, 69, of Alton IL, passed away unexpectedly after a courageous, long-fought battle with cancer on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at his home.

Born on February 24, 1955, in Alton, IL, Andy was the oldest son of Lewis Bernard and Helen Elizabeth (Parison) Bensman. On June 24, 1977, he married the love of his life, Ann F. Bierbaum, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Alton sharing 47 years of happiness.

He was the real-life super-man to his family. He now gets to finally enjoy a plate full of pork-steaks, while playing his guitar for the angels in heaven. He spent his free time doing what he loved most, playing music and exploring the outdoors with his grandchildren. He loved baseball and coached his daughters and many others in softball for years.

Andy is survived by his beloved wife, Ann Bensman; his daughters, Elizabeth M. Wells (Jake) and Sara A. Wheeler (Jason); and his grandchildren, J.R. Wells, Josie Wells, Mia Pearl Wheeler and Ava June Wheeler.  He is also survived by his siblings, Connie Bond (Bob), Susie Bensman-Logsdon, Jim Bensman (Claire), and Jeff Bensman (Peggy), many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Andy's true passion in life was music. He made lifelong friendships with some of the areas most talented musicians. His love of music began at a young age, and he influenced his brothers to love making music together. Basement Band members, Jeff Gray, and Dick Rachel helped him navigate some of his toughest days by sharing the love of music as well.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 10 a.m. until the Celebration of life service at 2 p.m. at Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Alton or Jerseyville Middle School's music programs to help purchase musical instruments for others.

Memorials can be made out to AMS for Alton Middle School or JCMS for Jerseyville Middle School.
