Alice Marie Phelps, 90, a lifetime Alton resident, passed away peacefully Friday, February 26, 2016 surrounded by many members of her loving family. She was born December 9, 1925 the daughter of John J. and Edna L. (Schmitt) Hesse. After graduating Alton High School she married James Edward Arter Phelps on January 14, 1945 at 12th St. Presbyterian Church. She was his devoted wife and mother of their four sons. During her life she worked as a secretary at Owens Illinois glass, sales clerk at J.C. Penney at Eastgate, and as a secretary for John Bloomer State Farm Ins. She was an active worker in the Alton P.T.A., Den Mother for several years in the Alton Cub Scouts Assoc. and a devoted primary Sunday school teacher at 12th St. Presbyterian Church where she was later honored with the “Life Time Member Service Award.” She loved music, gatherings with family and friends, and feeding her birds and squirrels. Alice was a loving and gentle person who never had an unkind word for anyone. Loved by “All who knew her” she will be deeply missed. She spent her final two years at Morningside (Provisions) assisted Living with her (constant companion) “DeeDee”; a 12 year old little black poodle. She is survived by three sons and their wives, Mark and Rose of Shipman, IL, Gary and Stacy of Alton, Roger and Sue of Alton and a daughter in law Betty Phelps of Bunker Hill, 15 grand children, 22 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jim, her only brother, Donald J. Hesse of Decatur, IL and her son Brian of Bunker Hill. All who knew and loved her are invited to attend her visitation and celebration of life at Gent Funeral Home in Alton on Monday, February 29, 2016 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. where funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1st with Pastor Steven Helfrich to officiate.
