James E. German, Sr., 90, passed away 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Bethalto Care Center.
Born May 5, 1924 in Girard, he was the son of John and Sarah Belle (Parker) German.
He served as a Gunner's Mate 2/c in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was employed at Laclede Steel for 32 years before retiring in 1982. Jim had served as a Special Deputy for the Madison County Sheriff's Department.
On March 9, 1950 in Hernando, MS, he married the former Margaret Nieft. She died November 30, 2000.
Surviving are four sons, James, Jr. (Ginger) German of Wright City, MO, David (Rita) German of Wood River, John (Vicky) German of Cottage Hills, Richard (Kimberly) German of Santee, CA; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a very special friend, Vera J. Schultz.
Preceding in death were his parents; wife; six brothers; and four sisters.
Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River where services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday.
Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
