George Cockrell

George M. Cockrell, 47, formerly of Alton, died at 3:10 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 2014 at Blessing Hospital E.R. in Quincy, IL.

Born May 5, 1967 in Alton, he was the son of Linda Cannon of Brighton and the late Hugo Cockrell. George graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and was the pharmacy manager at K-Mart in Quincy. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan and loved Missouri Tiger basketball. He enjoyed traveling and playing board games as well as teaching others how to play.

On October 22, 2012 he married Rachel King. She survives. Along with his mother and wife, he is survived by a son, Kevin Cockrell of Salem, IL, his mother and father-in-law, Robert and Marsha King of Zebulon, GA, step brothers, Jeffery Cannon of The Villages, FL, Jerry Cannon of Alton, two brothers-in-law, Dr. Matthew Steele of Ft. Worth, TX, and Captain Jonathan King of Ft. Stewart, GA, an aunt, Phyllis Benvenuto of Wood River, and an uncle, Charles Benvenuto of Anthony, FL. Along with his father, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Floyd Cannon, and a step-sister, Janice Richards.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Reverend Rob Ellard will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the First Baptist Church of Brighton.
