Shirley L. Ursprung, 83, of Edwardsville, passed away at 9:01 am Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Relais Bonne Eau in Edwardsville.
She was born May 24, 1931, in East Alton, the daughter of Harold and Verna (Bright) Hord.
She married Carl Ursprung on August 1, 1950 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Wood River. He preceded her in death on February 6, 2006.
Shirley was a homemaker most of her life and was a member of Eden United Church of Christ in Edwardsville, where she taught Sunday School for twenty-five years. She was also a leader in the 4-H program, and active in the Women’s Guild and Circle #6. Shirley was an avid reader who also loved to do needle point work.
In addition to her husband of sixty three years, she is survived by five children and their spouses, Carla Weil of Muskogee, OK, Cay Ursprung and Jim Takacs of Edwardsville, Craig Ursprung of Edwardsville, Curtis Ursprung of Goreville, IL and Catherine Ursprung and Robert Chiu of Centennial, CO; a daughter-in-law, JoAnne Ursprung of Edwardsville; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Kelli Towell and Steve Wiley, Justin and Kristin Towell, Matthew Towell, Jason and Ginny Ursprung, Jennifer and Chris Heuer, Nichole Ursprung and Cadence Ursprung-Chiu; three great-grandchildren, Trinity and Briley Towell and Henry Ursprung; a brother and sister-in-law, Henry “Buck” and Jean Hord of Godfrey and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a son, Charles Ursprung.
Visitation will be from 9 am until services at 12 Noon on Friday, August 1, 2014 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Diane Grohmann officiating.
Burial will take place in Rose Lawn Memory Garden in Bethalto.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or Eden United Church of Christ in Edwardsville.
