Ruth Anna Marie Baxter, 97, passed away at 8:07 pm Friday, October 18, 2013 at her residence under the care of Passages Hospice.

She was born on August 14, 1916 in Alton, to the late Frank J. & Lydia E. (Schwab) Schmidt.

She married G. “Wayne” Baxter on June 3, 1939 in Alton and he preceded her in death on December 14, 2008. 

Ruth was employed as secretary at Standard Oil for a short time before her marriage to Wayne.  She belonged to the St. John United Church of Christ in Wood River where she was the oldest aged member of the congregation at this time.  She was a member of the Roxana Senior Group and the Wood River Moose Lodge with her husband.  She enjoyed camping, traveling, and gardening.  The love of her life was her children, grand and great grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn & Edgar Tohill of Alton and Charlotte & Lynn Wright of McLeansboro, IL; six grandchildren and their spouses, Kevin & Nina Tohill, Amy & Ronald Stull, Brian & Andrea Tohill, Gwen & Earl Macam, Jill Wright and Gary & Jennifer Wright; thirteen great grandchildren, Megan, Lucas, Landon, Simone, Nathan, Garrett, Marissa, Kyle, Aaron, MacKenzie, Noah, Morgan and Wyatt and one brother and sister-in-law, Edwin & Betty Schmidt of Louisville, KY. and a nephew, Mark Schmidt.

She is preceded her in death by her parents; husband and one brother, Elmer Schmidt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.

Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at St. John United Church of Christ in Wood River.

Burial will be at the Brighton City Cemetery.  Pall bearers include:  Gary Wright, Kevin and Lucas Tohill, Brian Tohill, Earl Macam, and Mark Schmidt.  Honorary Pall Bearers include:  Wyatt Wright, Noah Macam, Kyle and Aaron Tohill, Nathan and Garrett Stull.

Memorials may be made to the St. John United Church of Christ in Wood River and or Passages Hospice.
