Doris E. Smith, 82, died at 11:43 a.m. Monday, October 14, 2013 at her home. Born March 16, 1931 in Alton, she was the daughter of the late Dean and Edith (Spiess) Smith. Doris worked for Owens-Illinois Glass, Monticello College, St. Joseph Hospital, and retired from St. Anthony’s Health Center. She was a life-long member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. She was a very special aunt and loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own. Surviving are two nieces, Ann Henkhaus (Vic) of Wood River, Jeanne Rynders (Tim) of Godfrey, a nephew, Don Markovitch (Lou Ellen) of Indianapolis, great nieces and nephews, Rebecca Elliott (Mike), Brian Saenz (Kristin), Rachel Waters (Brandon), Danny and Jenna Rynders, great-great nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Maddie, Katie, Eli, Simon, and Samantha, and a brother-in-law, Carl Markovitch. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Betty Markovitch, and a brother, Donald Smith. A memorial visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until memorial Mass at 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2013 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. Monsignor Kenneth Steffen will officiate. Private burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey. Memorials may be made to Children’s Cancer Research Fund or SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church.
