Thomas Springman

Thomas E. Springman, 82, died at 2:03 p.m. Monday, October 14, 2013 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Born September 5, 1931 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton, he was the son of John J. and Marie (Woods) Springman. He graduated from Marquette High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954. On November 20, 1954 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, he married the former Jeanne M. Long. In the summer of 1970, they moved their family to the country in Brighton to operate Oak Rest Campground full time. Mr. Springman retired from Springman Lumber Company after 60 years of service. Along with his wife, he is survived by seven children, Thomas “TJ” Springman (Judy) of Brighton, Michael Springman (Sue) of Brighton, Patrick Springman (Kathy) of Brighton, Ann Hunter (John) of Jerseyville, Mary Beilsmith (Tony) of Brighton, Catherine Kasting (Chuck) of Brighton, and Nancy McAfee (Brent) of Brighton, 11 grandchildren, Marie Shultz (Jamie) of Godfrey, Erin McAfee of Brighton, Patrick Springman (Callie) of Jerseyville, Matthew Springman (Merideth) of Brighton, Kathleen Dunham (Travis) of Brighton, Laura Branham (Mike) of Alton, Jacob Springman of Brighton, Emily McAfee of Brighton, Ryan Kasting of Brighton, Christopher Springman of Brighton, and Daniel Kasting of Brighton, four great grandchildren and one on the way, Kailey McAfee of Brighton, Logan Branham of Alton, Thor Springman of Brighton, Eli Dunham of Brighton, and a sister, Angela Springer (Don) of Hermann, MO. Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law, Helen Long of St. Louis, MO, Jim Long of Alton, Joe Long (Nancy) of Rockford, IL, Kate Chester (David) of Houston, TX, and Mary DeFrates (Don) of Oviedo, FL, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Kevin Springman, two brothers, Bernard Springman (Harriet), and John J. Springman Jr., a sister, Virginia Wegener (George), a brother-in-law, John E. Long, and a sister-in-law, Ronda (Mook) Long. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 18, 2013 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. Monsignor Kenneth Steffan will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey. Memorials may be made to The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis, MO or SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church.
