Betty Smith

Betty L. Smith, 74, passed away unexpectedly at 10:30 am Friday, September 27, 2013 at her home.   

She was born on January 20, 1939 in Murrayville, IL, the daughter of George and Juanita (Brogdon) Lawson. 

She married Rodger L. Smith on August 19, 1955 at Curdie Heights Baptist in Alton.  He passed away on June 11, 2012.

Betty was a cook at the Bethalto School District for twenty two years, retiring in 2000.  She was a member of the Westerner Club. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, bowling, the St. Louis Cardinals, was a big Elvis fan and loved her kids, grandkids and great grandkids.   

She is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Steven and Patricia Smith of Granite City, Michael Smith of Wood River, Timothy and Valerie Smith of Bethalto and Jeffrey and LeAnn Smith of Bethalto; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Bradley and Kim Smith, Bryan and Megan Smith, Brett and  Kathi Smith, Nona Lynn  and Jordan Warford, Layne Smith and his fiancé’ Julia Johnson, Amanda and James Keller, Nicole Smith and her significant other, Art Fuller and T.J. Smith; six great grandchildren, Vincent Moore, Brayden Keller, Camden Lee Smith, Sterling Smith, Lyle Smith and Parker Warford; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Velma Saunders of Bunker Hill and Deloris and Bill Hausman of Havana, IL; a brother and sister-in-law, Lyndell and Lee Lawson of Ohio; a sister-in-law, Pat Koshinski of Bethalto and several nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Margaret Saxton. 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Monday, September 30, 2013 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. 

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at the funeral home with Pastor Jason Pierce officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto/

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the Civic Memorial High School Athletic Department/.
