Endre Komlos, 91, died at his home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday September 25, 2013.

 

Endre was born December 25, 1921 in Kikinda, formerly part of Hungary. He was the son of Josef and Jozefina (nee Kimich) Komlos. He studied medicine in Hungary and arrived in Germany as a displaced person after WW2. He married Annelies Schmidberger in Landshut, Germany on November 22, 1945.

He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1951.  He served in various medical positions in Minot, ND., Chicago, IL., and Alton, IL. He was a physician serving in the United States Air Force at Altus, OK, from 1955 to 1957. Leaving the service as a Major in the Medical Corps, he returned to Alton to serve on the staff of the Alton State Hospital (now Alton Mental Health Center) as the Assistant Superintendent, and later as Medical Director before retiring in 1987.

He played competitive soccer as a youth, and enjoyed watching sports on television. As an adult his hobbies included gardening, stamp collecting, chess and traveling with his family.

Endre was predeceased by Annelies, his beloved wife of 67 years; his parents; and his four brothers: Bela, Miklos, Sandor, and Karci. He is survived by four children: Patricia Komlos of Manchester, MO., Ralph Komlos of Godfrey, Elisabeth Komlos-Hrobsky (Peter) of Boulder, CO., and Peter (LaVonne) Komlos of Appleton WI. There are three grandchildren: Emma Komlos-Hrobsky of New York City, Natalie (Brian) Komlos- Zeiler of Kennesaw, GA., and Nicole (Matt) Patterson of Redwood City, CA. Great grandchildren include Keren, Lucy and Owen Patterson, and Tabitha Zeiler.

Endre was loved by his family and will be dearly missed by them and his best pal and faithful dog, Cody, who shared many a car ride and daily walks around his garden with him.

A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, October 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. 

Memorials may be made to Doctors Without Borders, Midwest Wheaten Rescue of Omaha, NE., or a charity of the donor’s choice.
