Howard Areford

Howard L. (Pete) Areford (80), passed away September 19, 2013 with his loved ones in his heart at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in St. Louis, after a lengthy illness. Our thanks to the entire VA staff and Heartland Hospice for the wonderful compassionate care they provided.
He was born in Bruceton Mills, WV to Howard L. Areford Sr. and Dorothy (Wheeler) Areford. They preceded him in death, as well as his beloved step-father Avalon Hawkins.
He was married to Mary (Murphy) Areford. They had three children, Charles of Eugene, OR; Michael of Escondido, CA; and LeAnn of Kirkwood, MO: four grandsons, Jason and Kyle Areford, Patrick and Henry Reichhold and one great grandson, Xavier Reichhold.
Pete was in banking and finance, having worked for Midland Finance, ITT Aetna, Liberty Loan, and First National Bank in Alton, before moving to San Diego, CA where he and his bride of thirty-six years, Rebecca (Riney) Areford, owned a snack food distributorship. After eleven years, they left paradise, bought a motor home, and set out to fulfill their dream to travel. Life was good.
He is survived by brothers Harry and Alan Areford, and Avelon Hawkins and sisters Carol Sliker, Ruth Baker, and Linda Mills.
He will be sadly missed by his family and his special four legged children, Max and Jesse.
