Fred Bryant

  Fred Allen Bryant, 93, passed away at 2:33 p.m. Thursday, August 29, 2013 at his home.

  He was born Dec. 27, 1919 in Waverly, Ill. to William Leslie and Edith (Rouland) Bryant.

  He married Edith Lucille Austin June 13, 1941 in St. Louis.  She passed away Oct. 7, 2007.

  Fred was a supervisor/operator for Shell Oil in Wood River, Ill., retiring in 1983 after 43 years.  He was an excellent woodworker and carpenter, and enjoyed fishing and golf.  He and his wife Edith were past Moose members and enjoyed dancing there.  He also was a member of the Senior Lunch Bunch at his church, the United Presbyterian Church in Wood River.  Fred served the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a mechanic and navigation instructor.  He was member of the East Alton American Legion.

  Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Phyllis Ann and Dr. William “Bill” Ortman of Galena, Ill. and Carol Lynn Hanold of East Alton; 5 grandchildren, Amy Hanold, Laura Stover, Jeff Ortman, Cindy Funston and Carrie Stralow; and 8 great grandchildren. 

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Paul Hanold, Jr.; a sister, Opal Keune; and 3 brothers, Allie, Wilson and Howard Bryant.

  Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 3 at the United Presbyterian Church in Wood River from 9:30 a.m. until services begin at 11 a.m.  Rev. Pam Laing will officiate.

  Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto, Ill. with military honors by Alton VFW Post #1308.

  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to his church or BJC Wings.
