Virgil C. Stone, 86, died at 5:25 a.m., Friday, August 23, 2013 at Willow Rose Rehab & Health Care in Jerseyville.
He was born in Jersey County on March 17, 1927, and was the son of the late Chris & Elizabeth (Kruse) Stone. Virgil farmed for many years beginning near the Piasa/Shipman area, before purchasing a dairy farm in Greenfield, where he raised his family.
He married the former Barbara Bauer on Dec. 28, 1955 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and together they have shared 57 years together.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Stone of Jerseyville; a daughter, Linda George of Aurora, Co.; four grandchildren & their spouses, Jeff & Shannon Dixon of Greeley, Co., Christina George of St. Louis, Mo., Jodi Stone of Greenfield, and Mike & Heather Stone of Greenfield; two great grandsons, Sam & Cooper Dixon of Greeley, Co.; four sisters & brothers in law, Roberta Burleson of Alton, Dorothy Eisenreich of Alton, Mary & Charles Moore of Alton, and Shirley & Paul Berry of Granite City.
In addition to his parents, Virgil was preceded in death by his son, Michael Stone in 1992; three brothers, Melvin, William & Leon Stone; and a sister, Margie Milller.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville with a Prayer Service read at 3:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Patrick Gibbons officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville.
Memorials may be given to the Activity Department at Willow Rose or to Masses
