Thelma Golden

Thelma I. Golden, 92, of Bethalto, IL, died at 6:15 a.m. Tues. Aug. 20, 2013 at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville, IL.

She was born May 11, 1921 in Mt. Olive, IL to the late August & Tillie (Albers) Roehl.

Thelma started working as a housekeeper at the age of 14 at the Beall Mansion in Alton.  She later moved to Chicago where she met and married Martin J. Golden on May 7, 1949.  Upon their return to the area, she worked for the Glass Works and later for Morse Home Improvement.  She and Martin had been well-known ballroom dancers, members of the Alton Eagles #254 and the Wood River and Alton VFW’s prior to his death on Oct. 18, 2006.

She is survived by: a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy James & Carla Golden of Maryville, IL and a sister, Fern Celsor of Godfrey, IL.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by: 2 brothers, Elmer & Emmett Roehl and 2 sisters, Pearl Moreland and Ruth Whitehouse.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thurs. Aug. 22, 2013 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Fri. Aug. 23, 2013 with Fr. Tom Liebler officiating.  Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. 

Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
