OUR COUNTRY IS MOURNING, A SOLDIER DIED TODAY

Clifton Reid Rogers, 87, passed away at 4:05 am Sunday, August 4, 2013 at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon.

He was born on June 14, 1926 in Bunker Hill, IL the son of John William and Lillian Goldie (Mallet) Rogers.

He married Helen Elizabeth Harting on February 19, 1952 in Jackson, Mississippi. She preceded him in death on March 1, 2010.

For over 23 years, Reid proudly served in three different branches of the U.S. Military, Army, Navy and Air Force.  He retired from the military in 1966 and settled his family in Bethalto.  He retired in 1987 from Illinois Bell Telephone after over 20 years of service. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto and St. Boniface Church in Edwardsville.  He was an avid supporter of the Bethalto American Legion, Bethalto Rotary Club, helped to provide transportation to the Bethalto Senior Citizen Center, was a coach for Khoury League, a founding father of the Bethalto Boys and Girls Club and with his wife, Helen sponsored a Chinese family who escaped from Vietnam by boat during the war and made their home in Bethalto.

He is survived by three children, a son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Kimberley & Phil Schoenfeld of Edwardsville, Stephen Bradley and Kasey Rogers of Missouri and Patrick Lee Rogers of Alton; five grandchildren, John Marburger, Melinda Schon Beyer, Matthew Rogers, Elizabeth Rogers, and Theresa Clayton; seven great grandchildren, sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Dorothy & Bill East of Jerseyville; a brother-in-law& sister-in-law, William & Carol Harting of Ritzville, WA; two sisters-in-law, Mary Rogers of Jerseyville and Velma Harting of Oklahoma City, OK and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Gregory Michael Rogers, four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Orval and Wilma Rogers, Clyde Rogers, Melvin Rogers and Raymond and Ann Rogers, a sister, Edna Rogers, two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Corzine (James) and Marcella Royse (Whitey) and a brother-in-law, Wilber Harting.

In celebration of his life visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.  Funeral services will be at 10 am on Friday, August 9, 2013 at the funeral home. 

Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Fieldon with military rites given by the Jerseyville American Legion Post #492.

Memorials may be made to the Bethalto Boys & Girls Club.
