Robert Henry Steckel, 83, died peacefully at 3:40 p.m., Friday, June 29, 2012 at the Jerseyville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center with his family at his side. He was born Dec. 7, 1928, and was one of four children of the late Frederic & Helen Catherine (Hodapp) Steckel.
He graduated in 1946 from White Hall High School, and served his country in Germany with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
His work was being the dedicated owner/operator of Steckel Produce in Jerseyville, his hobby was farming west of Kane, but his true pride and source of contentment were times spent with his wife, children & grandchildren.
He married the former Helen Beiermann on Aug. 8, 1950 at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and together they have shared and been blessed with nearly 62 years together.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Steckel of Jerseyville; seven children & their spouses, Barbara & James Sick of Little Rock, Ar., Dennis & Marsha Steckel, Patricia & Fred Jedlicka, Mary & Randy Smith, Joseph Steckel, and his fiance' Gloria Roundcount Ufer, Henry Steckel, and his friend, Cathy Heitzig all of Jerseyville and Catherine & Thomas Puch of St. John, In.; 23 Grandchildren; 11 Great Grandchildren; a sister, Eileen Becker of Mesa, Az.; a sister in law, Rosemary Steckel of Jerseyville; along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Fathers Mark Dolan and William Hembrow concelebrating.
Burial will be in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Jerseyville, with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites.
Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville, Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis, or to Masses.
