Calvin Stine

Calvin D. “Denny” Stine, 80, passed away with his loving family by his side at 6:59 p.m. Friday, June 17, 2011 at Alton Memorial Hospital.  Born September 10, 1930 in Evansville, IN, he was the son of Albert Dennis and Floy (Funk) Stine. 

Denny graduated from Alton High School in June 1948.  He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1948 and served for four years.  He then attended and graduated from Shurtleff College in 1956 with a degree in business.  He worked for Laclede Steel in both Alton and St. Louis and retired in 1991 after 35 years of service.  Denny was baptized and confirmed at Messiah Lutheran Church in Alton in January of 1959.  On April 12, 1958, he married the former Carolyn Beuttel in Alton.  She survives. 

Also surviving are three children, Alan (Liz Lodman) Stine of Helena, MT, Brian (Mary Barnard) Stine of Creswell, OR, and Cheryl (Robert) Hill of Godfrey, five grandchildren, Anna Stine of Creswell, OR, Christopher and Katie Hill of Godfrey, and Carrie and Nicole Stine of Helena, MT.  He will also be missed by his Norwich Terrier Sophie Karoline.  Also surviving is a brother-in-law, Robert D. Hart and a niece, Donna Hart Evans both of Phoenix, AZ.  He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, three who died at birth, Carl, Carolyn and Joseph and his sister, Marilyn Stine Hart who died in September 2004.  His greatest joys were his family and family vacations to the Ozarks, Florida, Montana, Oregon, Canada, Mexico and the British Virgin Islands and numerous national parks.  He enjoyed golfing with his buddies and sailing with family and friends on the Mississippi River and sailing in the Abacos in the Bahamas.  Denny was an avid reader and enjoyed discussing politics. 

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Faith Lutheran Church in Godfrey.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Organ Fund at Faith Lutheran Church, Parkside Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 5124, Godfrey, IL 62035, or Alton Memorial Health Services Foundation.  Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
