Betty L. McDaniels, 75, passed away at 11:15 a.m., Sunday, March 6, 2011 under the compassionate care of the staff at Eunice Smith Home in Alton.  She was born on April 2, 1935 in Cairo, IL the daughter of the late Nellie (Stoner) and Archie Verble. 

She married John L. McDaniels, June 20, 1964, at Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church in Alton.  He survives.  She earned her B.S. in English at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and her M.S. in English at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville.  A career educator, she loved teaching and was on the faculty at high schools in Highland, Wood River, and Joliet before teaching English and American Literature at Alton High School, beginning in 1964.  She retired in 1993.  Betty was a member of the professional honorary Society of women educators, Delta Kappa Gamma, Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, and Kiwanis Club of Alton-Godfrey.  She was recognized for her teaching excellence by inclusion in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.  Betty volunteered her time after retirement to the Caravan Oasis Shop, Alton Museum of History and Art, and her church.  She loved to travel with her husband and enjoyed trips to Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and many places in the United States and Canada, especially summer vacations on Cape Cod.  She thoroughly enjoyed family and friends who loved her dearly.  She will be missed greatly by all. 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her twin brother, Bill Verble, of Fredericksburg, VA, nieces, Barbara (Richard) Burnett of Murphysboro, IL, Patty (James) Paternoster, Oswego, NY, Haila (John) Cavanagh of Bedford, Texas, Karen (Tom) Jackson of Orlando, FL and a nephew, Brian (Lisa)Verble of Escalon, CA.  Also surviving are Peggy (Bill) Wedgwood, of Manchester, NH, Jeff (Rachel) Arnold of Falls Church, VA, Jim (Beth) Arnold of Andover, MA, Douglas (Sandra) Wallace of Bonner Springs, KS, Tracie (Donald) Hayden of Tonganoxie, KS and beloved cousins, great nieces and great nephews. 

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Carter. 

A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church in Alton with the Reverend David Olson to officiate. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church in Alton.
