Ruth Jolly

Wood River |

Ruth E. Jolly, 86, passed away at 8:17 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2010 at her home.

She was born Jan. 27, 1924 in Vandalia, Mo. to Dallas and Nettie (Herron) Day. Ruth moved to Jacksonville when she was very young and spent most of her youth there.

She married James Jolly in 1942. They shared 68 years of marriage. He survives. They moved to the East Alton-Wood River area after World War II.

In 1946 she was blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Linda Lee Jolly. Ruth became a member of the First Baptist Church of East Alton, where she served in many offices, including Deaconess, Mission Board, Christian Education, Board Worship, Sunday School teacher for juniors and BYF for several years.

She worked in the Men’s Tailoring, Owens-Illinois Glass, and owned and operated Ruth’s Beauty Shop for 30 years.

In 1975 she was blessed with a beautiful granddaughter, Amy Heather Waters. She enjoyed the precious years she had with her daughter and granddaughter until 1989 when they were taken to be with the Lord. This was a very difficult time for Ruth. She said four Bible verses helped her through the valleys of life: Psalm 118:24, Isaiah 40:31, Philippians 4:13, and Ephesians 6:11. She lived each day to her fullest.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two nieces, Mary Derge of Gilson, Ill. and Cindy Holmes of Jacksonville; four nephews, Michael Day of Wood River, Dennis Day of Alton, Dr. Mark Lee Day and his wife, Darla (whom Ruth called her little buddy) of Vandalia, and John Griffin of Mauldin, S.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Linda Lee Jolly Waters; granddaughter Amy Heather Waters; two brothers Charles H. Day and Dallas J. Day; and three sisters, Mildred Mae and Dorothy Fern Day and Leona Griffin.

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 26 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be made to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Lung Center Research.
