John J. Stokes, 66, passed away peacefully on Monday May 10, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Medical Center in Alton.
He was born on December 16, 1943 in St. Louis, the son of Marvin and Mary (Hanson) Stokes.
John served in the U.S. Army in Mapping Mission in Ethiopia as a radio operator.
He married Betty G. Lamere on January 2, 1971. She preceded him in death in 1974. He work for St Louis Post Dispatch for 35 years, starting out as a machinist, and later becoming a proof reader. John was an avid reader and music lover.
He is survived by his brother David Stokes and sister in law Neva of Brighton and one niece Emily Stokes.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 9:30am until time of funeral services at 10:30am on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Abundant Life Community Church in Godfrey with Pastor Sam Henning officiating.
Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park with military rites conducted by the VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
Memorials may be made to the Abundant Life Community Church Music or Youth Departments.
