Rudolph "Rudy" C. Sowders Jr.

Rudolph "Rudy" C. Sowders Jr., age 73, passed away at 5:25 pm, Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at the Rosewood Care Center, Alton, IL.

He was born in Alton, IL on February 28, 1937, to Rudolph C. and Velma (Crews) Sowders Sr.

He married Betty Iberg on September 10, 1955 in E. Alton, IL she survives.

Rudy retired in 1985 after 26 yrs. service with the Alton Police Department. He served as Chief of Police from 1969 to 1985. After his retirement he worked as a manager for the Pepsi Cola Distributing Co. He co-owned and operated Turn 2 Collectibles for 16 yrs. He was also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, FBI National Academy Association, Major Case Squad, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, Southern Illinois Police Chiefs Association, Policemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of Illinois, Illinois Police Association, FBI National Academy Associates of Illinois and the Alton Nature League. He was a former member of the Rotary Club, Lions Club, and East End Business Association.

He is survived by his wife, mother; Velma Hutte of Alton, and two daughters; Lisa and her spouse Jeff Dublo of Godfrey, and Donna Droste of Alton, four sons: Rick and his spouse Susan Sowders of Alton, John and his spouse Ellen Sowders of Godfrey, Jerry and his spouse Donna Sowders of Belleville, and Mark Sowders of Alton. Thirteen grandchildren: David Sowders, Angela Sowders, Matt Sowders, Steven Sowders, Kathy Sowders, Logan Sowders, Cole Sowders, Natalie Sowders, Jeff Dublo Jr.. Melissa Dublo, Michael Dublo, Joshua Droste, and Bethany Droste. Two great-grandchildren; Jenna Dublo and Grant Dublo. Two sister’s-in-law Elaine Iberg of Highland, and Shirley and her spouse Michael Bandy of Trenton. A brother-in-law James and his spouse Nina Bizaillion of Godfrey, and a close friend, Dale Dooley of Roxana.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Friday May 7, 2010 at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, Il.

Funeral Services and Burial will be private.

Memorials may be directed to the 5 A’s Animal Shelter.
