Doyle McDaniel, age 87, died at 2:45am, Saturday April 17, 2010, at Eldercare of Alton.
He was born on May 28, 1922 in Gideon Missouri to Grover and Leah (Haywood) McDaniel.
He married Betty Reagor on March 1, 1944 in Piggot Arkansas. She preceded him in death in 1996.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in various roles in the Bethalto School District for over 30 years, from which he retired in 1982. In high school and college Doyle was an outstanding athlete holding many titles, of these, his most cherished was playing for the University of Missouri in the 1946 Cotton Bowl.
Doyle is survived by three daughters; Janet Spurgeon of Chaffee MO, JoNell (Dan) Milligan of Elgin AZ and Kathy (Ron) Smith of Lake Oswego OR. One grandson; Joseph (Laura) Spurgeon He is also survived by his great grandchildren: Alexandria, Anya and John David Spurgeon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son in law; John Spurgeon, one infant son; Robert Doyle, two grandchildren; Dawn Spurgeon and Zach Smith, as well as one great granddaughter, Lily Spurgeon.
A private Memorial Service will be held by the family at a later date.
Mr. McDaniel’s family is being served by Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Bethalto Booster Club’s "Purple Pride" or an education fund for Doyle’s great grandchildren.
