Elmer "Jack" Harkey, 73, passed away at 4:15 am on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at his home with his family by his side.

He was born on July 2, 1936 in Lutesville, MO, the son of Elmer & Ruby E. (Nall) Harkey.

He married Bettye Hubbard on June 8, 1957. She passed away on April 28, 1961. He then married Donna Cox on June 7, 1963 at the Meadowbrook First Southern Baptist Church. She survives.

He was a schedule clerk at Laclede Steel in Alton and also sold real estate. He was a member of the Meadowbrook First Southern Baptist Church where he served as song leader and on other various committees. He served as a trustee and chairman of the Meadowbrook Public Water District, a volunteer fireman and treasurer of the Meadowbook Fire Department, was very active in the Khoury League and enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting activities.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sharon Harkey of Meadowbrook; a son & daughter-in-law, Jeff & Jill Harkey of Bethalto; two grandchildren, Kaci & Nic Harkey; 3 sisters and 2 brothers-in-law, Ruth Retherford of Meadowbrook, Monzelle & Clinton Woodfin of Bolivar, MO, and June & Barney Becraft of Keyesport, IL; 2 brothers & sisters-in-law, Walter & Peggy Harkey of Meadowbrook and Howard & Dorothy Harkey of Shipman; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charlotte Cox of Brighton;, Bob & Linda Cox of Brighton, Linda & Tom Ozee of Karbor Ridge, IL, Ed Whitehead of Jerseyville and George & Susan Cox of Kuttawa, KY; many nieces and nephews and special friends, Bobby & Dorothy Hubbard of Meadowbrook.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, a sister-in-law, Tresea Whitehead, 2 brothers-in-law, Art Cox & Gerald Retherford, his mother-in-law & father-in-law, Jesse & Edith Cox. .

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm, Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Meadowbrook First Southern Baptist Church in Meadowbrook. Funeral services will be at the church on Friday at 10 am with Rev. Craig Wurst and Rev. Clinton Woodfin officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be made to Meadowbrook First Southern Baptist Church.
