Catherine Hagen

Catherine Felice' Day Hagen, 95, died at 4:59 p.m., Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville.

She was born in Hardin on Jan. 24, 1914, the daughter of the late John and Addie (Fowler) Day Jr. Catheringe graduated from Visitation Academy in St. Louis, and attended Webster University graduating with a B.S. in Education. She began her educational career in a one room schoolhouse near Hamburg, and then became a caseworker for the State of Illinois caring for the elderly.

She married married Renard George Hagen on June 18, 1943 at St. Norbert's Catholic Church in Hardin. The made their home in Calhoun County for a short time, and relocated to Jerseyville in 1947. For several years, Catherine was a stay at home mother, caring for her three daughters until her youngest entered the first grade. She then resumed her love of teaching by starting at St. Francis Xavier Grade School for a few years, before entering the public school system through the Jersey Community Unit School District #100. For one year she taught at Otterville Grade School, and then moved to West Elementary in Jerseyville where she taught 4th grade until retiring in 1978. Even after retirement, Catherine still enriched the lives of children by subsituting whenever she was needed. She was a member of the St. Francis Xavier CAtholic Church in Jerseyville, where she was a member of the Altar Society and the quilting group, a Jersey County Election Judge, Illinois Education and National Education Associations, and was a volunteer for the gift shop at Jersey Community Hospital, and a volunteer ombudsman for nursing homes for the State of Illinois. She and her husband Renard were blessed with three daughters, and nearly 58 years of marriage before his passing on May 30, 2001.

Surviving are three daughters & sons in law, Loretta Margaret & Don Summers of Rogersville, Mo., Mary Helen & George LeFaivre of Philoh, and Cathie & Bill Ward of Jerseyville; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a brother & sister in law, John W. & Wannie Day of Rosewood Heights; and a double cousin and his wife, Joseph & Phyllis Day of Savoy. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Loretta Margaret Ritter and Mary Eleanor Roth, and a double cousin, whom she considered to be as close as any sister could be, Helen Day. At her request her body was cremated.

A Memorial visitation will be conducted from 9 a.m., until 10;45 a.m., Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Frs. Patrick Gibbons and John Patrick Day concelebrating.



A luncheon will be served immediately following the mass. Burial of her ashes will take place at the St. Anselems Catholic Cemetery in Kampsville.

Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Gost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville.
