Clarence Putnam

Clarence R. Putnam, 87, passed away at noon Friday, February 5, 2010 at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton.
Born May 9, 1922 in Royal, Ill., he was the son of George E. and Kate (Lorschen) Putnam.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a sergeant for the 22nd Infantry of Company D. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He later was wounded in action in Germany, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. He also was decorated with three bronze battle stars.

In 1948 he married Theresa Ann Schomaker in Mattoon, Ill. She passed away on Aug. 27, 2004.

He worked as an operator and dispatcher for Union Pacific Railroad for 39 years, retiring in 1986. He was a former member of the C.T. Employees Credit Union in Fairmont City, Ill.

Survivors include a daughter Janice Putnam of South Roxana and her significant other Eric Hanson of Bethalto; a son and daughter-in-law Michael and Karen Putnam of Wood River; three grandchildren, Christopher Putnam and his wife Kelley, Craig Putnam and his wife Erin, and Laurie Putnam; two great grandchildren, Grace and Drew Putnam; and a sister, Clara Arrowsmith of Minonk, Ill.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mildred Curtis and Dorothy Arrowsmith; and seven brothers, Junior, Wilbert, Alvin, Donald A., George E., Donald E., and Eugene Putnam.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9. The Rev. Dan Smith will officiate.

Interment will follow at Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana.

Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans.
