Laverna C. Ayres, age 84, passed away at 1:05 a.m. on Monday, February 1, 2010, at Eldercare of Alton.
She was born in Brighton, IL on September 25, 1925, the daughter of John W. and Calista (Chase) Baker.
Laverna married Junior B. (Lefty) Ayres, on August 24, 1942 at the Upper Alton Baptist Church in Alton, IL. He preceded her in death.
She was employed at the Marquette High School for over 20 years, where she was the cafeteria director, retiring in 1981. Laverna enjoyed bowling and especially enjoyed helping her husband Lefty with the American Legion Baseball team, post 126 where she was also a member of the auxiliary.
Laverna is survived by one daughter; June Naugle of Holiday Shores, IL and two sons; Bowen Ayres of Rosewood Heights, IL and Dr. David Ayres and his spouse Nancy of Wood River, IL; one foster son; Dr. Dai (Jack) Ping of Saline, MI; six grandchildren; Sheri Ameduri, Clayton Naugle, Alicia Ping, Jessica Ping, David Ping and Mary Hipsher, nine great-grandchildren, and one sister; Geraldine White of Alton Il.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother; Warren Baker, one sister Helen Odell, and a son-in-law Robert Naugle.
Visitation will be 9 am until time of service at 11 am, Tuesday February 9, 2010 at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, IL with the Rev. Brad Donoho officiating.
Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey, IL.
Memorials may be made to the Upper Alton Baptist Church in Alton, IL.
