Marie Roth

Marie Osborne Roth, 88, passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 28 at St. Anthony's hospital. She was one of four sisters born to Mary (Brink) and John Gerdesmeyer on the family farm in Calhoun County Illinois.

On October 26, 1940, she married James C. Osborne, also of Calhoun County and together they had two children. He passed away on May 12, 1966.  At that time, Marie became the voice of the First National Bank of Alton as their switchboard operator. She was well known for her charming personality and great sense of humor. She retired in 1983. She married Martin Roth on May 3, 1980; He passed away on October 17, 1983.  She is survived by her children. Michael (Arlene) Osborne of Bethalto and Mary (Michael) Eckhard of Godfrey, her grandchildren Elizabeth (Chuck) Smeal of Houtzdale, Pa., Adam and Amy Eckhard, her sisters, Doris and her husband, Clarence Mossman, and Jean Elble. She is also survived by a brother in law, Clinton Osborne, and two sisters in  law, Ruth Roth and Lucille Youngberg and many nieces and nephews who cared deeply for their "Aunt Marie" many good friends and neighbors.  

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents a sister, Cecilia Schlinker a sister in law, and four brothers in law. Marie was a longtime member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where she offered her help whenever possible. She was a member of the St. Anthony's Hospital.  Auxiliary Marie loved spending time with her family and was known to gather as many of them together as she could for social visits. She made a positive impression on everyone she met and was well known as a lively conversationalist. She loved and was loved by her family and devoted friends.

 At the request of Marie, there will be no visitation.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Feb, 2 at 10 a. m. at Sts Peter and Paul Catholic church with Father Steve Pohlman as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Alton, Il.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Resless Leg Syndrome foundation.op of form.
