Donald E. "Abe" Schelm, 82 went to his heavenly home to be with his Lord and Savior at 9:45 am on December 23, 2009 at Jerseyville Manor in Jerseyville, IL

He was born on October 5, 1927 in Alton, IL, the son of the late Frank & Helen (Lyons) Schelm.

He married Ruth Ann Neely on November 17, 1952 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on January 24, 2005.

He proudly served his country in both the Army and the Navy. He was a pipefitter for Shell Oil and Olin Brass for over 20 years, retiring in 1986. He loved to hunt, fish, the St. Louis Cardinals and Notre Dame. He was a lifelong member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and a member of the Alton VFW Post 1308.

He will be greatly missed by 2 daughters, Ellen Miller and her husband, Steve and Barb Crammond and her husband, Mark, all of Godfrey; 2 sons, Steve and Mark Schelm both of Alton; 3 grandsons and their spouses, Paul Beers and his wife Kimber of Jerseyville, Ronald Schelm and Gregory Bock Jr. and his wife Liz all of Alton; 5 granddaughters, Sara Crammond of Brighton, Jamie Schelm of Alton, Tara Bock, Ann Pulido and her husband Alex all of Godfrey and Tricia Clayton and her husband, Britt of Alton; 4 great grandsons, Chase Davis, Gavin Gray, Josiah Bock and Britton Clayton; 5 great granddaughters, Alyssa Gray, Aleigha Snipes, Berlynn Clayton, Madyson Schelm and Gianna Pulido; 2 sisters and brothers-in-law, Barb & Bob Young of Brighton and Cheryl & John Vogt of Liverpool, NY; and his best friend, Robert Parker of Alton and his cousin, Judson Deverger of Fieldon who was like a brother to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife.

Visitation will be from 12:30 pm until a Mass of Christian burial being celebrated at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton with Father Nnamdi Moneme OMV. Military rites by Alton VFW Post 1308 will be given.

Burial will be follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
