Steven Evancho

Steven E. "Steve" Evancho, 75, formerly of Jerseyville, died at 9:10 p.m. Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at his residence after several years of declining health. He was born in Chicago on Aug. 2, 1934, one of four children born to the late John & Mary (Sarna) Evancho. Steve was raised in Chicago, and graduated from Tilden Tech High School.   He entered the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean War. 

Shortly before his discharge, Steve married a sister of one of his Army buddies, the former Margaret Miller.  The two married on Jan. 17, 1959 at the Baptist parsonage in Jerseyville, and together they have shared just shy of 51 years together. For the first six years of their marriage they resided in Chicago, where he was employed with the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company,  as well as Calumet Coach.  However, Margaret longed to be back in Jersey County, and the two packed up their family and moved to Jerseyville where they raised their family. He retired in 1994 from Federal Steel in East Alton, where he had been employed as a welder and in lay out for nearly 30 years.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Evancho of Godfrey; five children & their spouses, Steve Evancho of Godfrey, Rhonda & Fred Wieneke of Jerseyville, Donna & Chuck Richie of Alton, Trish & Greg Medford of Jerseyville, and Jesse & Alexis Evancho of Alton; 11 Grandchildren, Tara, Stephanie, Dawn, Ellen, Chuck II, Julianna, Katelin, Jacob, Sam, Jenna, an Jace; two great grandchildren, Bethany & JJ; a sister & brother in law, Mary Ann and Edward Stoklosa of Lockport; and five nieces and nephews, whom Steve & Margaret raised after the tragic death of his sister & brother in law, Marty (Donna) Zibrida of Glendale Heights, Michael Zibrida of Chicago, Robert Zibrida of California, Joseph Ziprida of Pennsylvania, Kathy (Zibrida) Singleton of Godfrey, and Andrew Zibrida of Elsah. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cecilia Zibrida; and a brother, Larry Evancho.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville, with Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military rites. Memorials may be give to his wife to assist with mounting medical expenses.
