Donald O. Lovell, 81, passed away at 6:55 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2009 at St. Anthony's Hospital. Born June 2, 1928 in Roxana, he was the son of Robert T. and Viola (Nelson) Lovell. He married Norma K. Willman Feb. 3, 1950, and divorced in 1990.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served aboard the USS Winslow as a radar man. He owned and operated Lovell Coal and Ice in Roxana, closing the business in 1961. He then worked as an agent for Employers Insurance of Wausau until his retirement. He was an avid golfer, hunter, fisherman, and Cardinal baseball fan. In 1975 he moved his family to the Lake of the Ozarks, where he hunted, fished and raised cattle. He returned to the Alton area in 1998, and earlier this year moved to Glenhaven Gardens Assisted Living in Alton.
Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, David and Deborah Lovell of Godfrey, Rick and Pam Lovell of Topeka, Kan., Tom and Pam Lovell of Houston, Tex., and Jon Lovell of Ft. Worth, Tex.; six grandchildren, Amy Lovell, Tara Statos, Megan Crumpton, Jessica Overmeyer and Chris and Dale Thompson; 13 great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Loraine Lovell of Litchfield; seven sisters and three brothers-in-law, Sue and Dan Reilly of Alton, Mildred and Earl Strunk of Medora, Jesse and Joe Vidakovich of Wood River, Ann Wiltshire of Shipman, Mary Clapham of Osage Beach, Mo., Grace Welton of Springfield, Ill., and Lou Sunderland of Godfrey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Iris Dix and Margaret Frenz; and three brothers, Robert, Frank, and Dean Lovell.
According to his wishes, the body was cremated.
A memorial visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights.
