Charles Garner

Charles "Ed" Garner, 66, passed away Saturday, November 21, 2009, unexpectedly at home. Born July 18, 1943 in Prescott, Iowa, he was the son of Joseph Ray and Goldie May (Ewart) Garner.

Ed lived on a farm in Iowa growing up and became quite the horseman at an early age, winning many trophies and ribbons throughout his life. His passion was raising, riding and showing quarter horses and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He moved to Illinois in the early 60's with his new family and worked at Olin, Laclede Steel and then Chemetco as a crane operator. He owned and operated Garner-Stockton Quarter Horses in Carpenter until he retired.

He is survived by daughters, Debra "Debbie" Simmons and husband Steve of Godfrey and Diana "Dede" Snyder and husband Rick of Fosterburg; two sisters, Marjorie (Marion) Brown of Dorsey, Jeanne Newbury of Edwardsville; two brothers, Marvin (Sue) Garner of Dixon, MO, Gerald (Kathy) Garner of Clarinda, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind two adopted granddaughters Jessica and Christina Pratt, a special niece Lisa Lynn Newbury and dear friend Ruth Ann Ewing. His parents, a brother-in-law Robert Newbury and his former wife Sherry Stockton, preceded him in death.

A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights. Memorial donations can be made to Region II Special Olympics, in c/o Lisa Newbury, 1514 McCoy Dr., Edwardsville, IL 62025.
