Betty J. Newby, 81, died at 12:09 p.m., Sunday, November 15, 2009 at her home in Alton after a lengthy illness. She passed with the dignity and grace she possessed throughout her life and was surrounded by her loving family. She was born Aug. 9, 1928, in St. Louis, the daughter of the late Clarence and Pearl (Tines) Westrich. She married Bill W. Newby at the St. Cronan's Catholic Church in St. Louis on Jan. 21, 1950. He survives. In addition to her husband, Betty is survived by five daughters and three sons; Linda (Mike) Morrissey, Patti (Frank) Hughes, Mike (Noreen) Newby, Nancy (John) Magurany, Kathy (Terry) Bristow, Theresa (Todd) Harpole all of the Alton/Godfrey area, William Newby of San Mateo, CA, and Randy Newby of Chicago; eighteen grandchildren; Michael (Amanda) Morrissey, Vanessa (Randy) Bassett, Ryan (Sara) Morrissey, Ashley, Afton, and Ali Hughes, Heather, Jacob, and Zach Newby, Nicole (Bill) Piening, Jason (Laura) Bristow, Calvin Bristow, Johnny, Joe, and Jarad Magurany, Eoin Newby, Joshua Newby-Harpole, and Monica Hornsey-Harpole, 11 great grandchildren; Konnor, Kollin, Karson, and Kooper Morrissey, Madison Bassett, Will and Jack Piening, Dylan and Carsen Bristow, Gage and Ava Newby, one sister, Virginia (Westrich) Riddles, two brothers; Clarence (Gerry) Westrich, Kenneth (Bernice) Westrich all of St. Louis. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dolores Catherine (Westrich) Ball. The core of Betty's life was her family and faith. Unconditional love and maternal devotion were the predominant examples she set for her children. She deeply loved and cared for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty was a devout Catholic and a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church for over 45 years. She lived her final years with grace, dignity and reverence delighting everyone with her humor and her smile. Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. The Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Sts. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Alton. Graveside services will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
