Mary Vambaketes, 79, died at 7:30 a.m. Monday, October 19, 2009 in Alton. Born May 3, 1930 in Andros, Greece, she was the daughter of John and Irene (Genisis) Lafakis. She was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Swansea, IL where she was very active with the Philoptochos Society. This ladies organization does philanthropic work for children, elderly and the church. She also baked every Tuesday at the church for fundraising activities. She was a past president of the PTA. On September 28, 1947 in Alton, she married John George Vambaketes. He preceded her in death on January 27, 1999. Surviving is a daughter, Stella Georgitsis and her husband Ted of Roselle, IL, a son, Tony Vambaketes and his wife Peggy of Godfrey, five grandchildren; Mary, A.J., and John M. Vambaketes all of Godfrey, Marianna Georgitsis of Roselle, and Peter John Georgitsis and his wife Katie of Carol Stream, IL, three great grandchildren; Teddy and Ellianna Georgitsis, and Stella Mathews, two brothers; James Lafakis of East Chicago, IN, and Gregory Lafakis of Bartlett, IL, and three sisters; Billie Yiannakakis of Tucson, AZ, Angie Kefalas of Granite City, and Catherine Skordos of Fosterburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Louis Lafakis. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday. Father Achilles will officiate. Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Swansea, IL.
