Gertrude C. Baker, 86, died at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, October 15, 2009 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. Born June 29, 1923 in Alton, she was the daughter of Joseph and Christina (Byrd) Hellrung. She was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton and retired from the Olin Corporation in East Alton as an operator instructor. She married John "Red" Baker of March 15, 1947 in Alton. He preceded her in death on April 20, 2001. Surviving are four grandchildren; Tracy Quinonez and her husband Scott of Alton, Rachelle "Rocky" Cartwright and her husband Adam of Alton, Robin Christine Perrotte and her husband Ted of O'Fallon, MO, and Edward Garis of Wood River, ten great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and a son-in-law, Edward Garis of Moro. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Barbara Jean Garis, five brothers; Henry, Joseph, Frank, John, and Leroy Hellrung, and three sisters; Ann Cogan, Berniece Twichell, and Margaret Johnson. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. Father Felix Michel will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
