Cletus E. Henkhaus 86, passed away at 5:30 am on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at his residence while under the care of BJC Hospice.

He was born on February 19, 1923 in Alton, IL, son of the late Victor and Hilda (Rosin) Henkhaus.

He married Betty Danneman on May 8, 1943 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She survives.

Cletus was a 1st class maintenance repairman for Illinois Power Company for 19 years. He previously worked for Shell Oil as a machinist for 20 years. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. He was a lifetime member of the Alton KC's and he loved spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Betty; his children and their spouses, Vic (Ann) Henkhaus of Wood River, Patricia (Jay) Wolff of Alton, Sue (Bob) Higgins of Nashville, TN, Dan Henkhaus of Godfrey, Joseph Henkhaus of Alton, David (Terri) Henkhaus of Godfrey, Chris (Julie) Henkhaus of Alton, Mary (Andy) Harshbargar of Godfrey and Tom (Doris) Dooley of Alton; 28 grandchildren, Randy Henkhaus, Kim Trossauer, Kelly Stutz, Lisa Scheffel, David, Matthew & Michael Wolff, Julie Cheek, Adam Higgins, Jeremy and Jason Henkhaus, Amy Cole, Emily Mayberry, Carrie Alverno, Jake Henkhaus, Jeny Lewis, Brian, Tony, Marcus & Patrick Henkhaus, Christopher, Mandie & Nathan Henkhaus, Megan Thomas, Ryan Cassidy, Nicholis Warner, Jessica Stucker and AJ Harshbargar; 34 great grandchildren; 1 great, great grandchild and a sister-in-law, Carol Henkhaus

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Tom Henkhaus, a sister & brother-in-law, Bernadine and Harold Birerbaum.

Visitation will be from 10 am to 12 pm on Monday, October 12, 2009, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. A funeral Mass will be at the church at 12 Noon with Father Steve Pohlman officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Alton.

Memorials may be made to Masses, St. Ambrose Catholic Church and/or Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
