Marguerite Murphy

Marguerite Edna Murphy, 95, died at 1:08 a.m., Monday, October 5, 2009 at the Willow Rose Rehab & Health Care in Jerseyville. She was born in Randolph County, Mo. on June 19, 1914, and was the daughter of the late Arthur John & Dovie Mae (Stone) Herring.  After the death of her mother when Marguerite was just four years old, she was raised by her Stone grandparents. She married Carl Kenneth Murphy on Dec. 31, 1932 in Alton, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 1990 after sharing nearly 58 years together. In her early years, Marguerite worked for the International Shoe Factory, the Western in East Alton, and was a sorter at Reynolds Aluminum in St. Louis. After moving to Jerseyville in 1956, Marguerite remained at home,  where she was a dedicated wife and mother, assuming the responsibility of caring for her son, Kenneth after he contracted polio. Surviving are a daughter & son in law, Shirley & Lyle Monroe Sr. of Jerseyville; six grandchildren & their spouses, Lyle & Nancy Monroe Jr. of Smryna, Tn., Robert & Rebecca Monroe of Ft. Wayne, In., Michael & Marcia Monroe of Jerseyville, Michelle & Robert Hinson of Columbia, Tn., Debra & William Bird of Des Moines, Ia., and Keith & Mindy Murphy of Jerseyville; 17 Great Grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; three half sisters, Catherine Scoggins and Mary Brown both of Jerseyville, and Sharon Weller of Wood River; two half brothers, William Herring of Seymour, Mo., and John Herring of St. Joseph, Mn. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth Earl Murphy on Nov. 12, 1980 and Gerald Murphy on July 2, 2008; a daughter in law, Maudie Murphy; her step mother, Ellen Herring; three half brothers, Charles Earl Stone, Harold Herring, and Franklin Herring; and a half sister, Eva Irene Martens Meres. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Assembly of God in Jerseyville, with Rev. Randy Cartwright officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the First Assembly of God in Jerseyville, where she was a very active and faithful member for many years.
