William "Bill" George Homan Jr., 78, passed away at 4:50 am Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.
He was born on August 7, 1931 in Alton, the son of the late William G. & Laura I. (Haggerty) Homan Sr.
He married Velva "Jay" L. Jacob on June 19, 1954 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton. She survives.
He enlisted in the US Army serving his country from 1955-1957 and then took commission into the Army Nursing Corp. He was recalled into service from 1961 -1962 during the Berlin & Cuban Crisis and left reserve status as a Major.
He graduated from Alton High School, went to St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. He graduated from SIUE with a Bachelor of Science degree and SIUC with a Masters Degree.
He retired from St. Louis Veteran's Hospital; he worked at Alton State Hospital, Marion Illinois VA Hospital with the Vetertan's Administration, he worked at the Medical Center in Florrissant, MO and was in charge of 6 physicians. He then went on to sell real estate with REMAX, and Hemphill Real Estate in Alton.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael S. & Teresa Homan of Godfrey, two grandsons, Brandon Homan of St. Charles, MO and Justin Homan of Godfrey; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Vernon & Barb Jacob of Litchfield.
Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at Upper Alton Cemetery.
